FASHION VICTIMS - War on Want - 07.09.09

Around the world, garment factories hum for up to 20 hours a day. Workers, most of them women, are bent over machines, cutting patterns and folding clothes for long hours in dismal conditions, and paid a fraction of a living wage for their troubles. In Bangladesh, men and women work in garment factories for 80-100 hours a week for 5p an hour, not earning enough to cover their basic expenses, let alone send money to the families they left behind in villages around the country.

Around 4,000 children die every day simply because they don't have safe, clean water.

10 years ago, world leaders promised to tackle the problem of the poorest countries in the world having to pay off debts to the richest countries.

Only 20% of unpayable poor country debt has been dropped.

In December, 2009, a new global climate change deal will be made in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The community of Macambol in the Philippines - 29.10.08

The world's largest mining company - BHP Billiton - plans a huge new mine worth more than £13 billion in Macambol, Philippines.

Local people - who rely on fishing and farming for a living - fear it will bring serious risk of pollution and damage to their environment. 

Although these communities should have a say about mining on their land, they claim to have been kept in the dark about potential impacts of the new mine.

Many people think that slavery no longer exists. Yet at least 12 million people live and work in contemporary forms of slavery which have been defined and prohibited in international conventions.

CAFOD are campaigning for better rights for mine workers who dig out the gold that jewellers use for rings, ear-rings, necklaces and bangles!
